Hey!
I totally agree with much of this list.
I've always used garlic and a high carb intake. As a response, I'm drinking using gunpowder tea daily and eating porridge for breakfast (w' brown sugar). I seriously do feel more awake and 'full up'. I breakfast at 5am and don't get hungry until about 1pm!! I've just started using goji berries in my porridge and tea.

I wasn't able to get the umeboshi plums, tho (and fear the salt content).

From my reading/experience, I'd add to this list....
i) water, ii) honey iii) olives

I'll try the misu soup, onigiri and mackerel (will also use soya milk for my porridge), then will post back in a week or so!

Great site, btw.

Joanne, thanks for the articles. I refuse to support the cow industry by buying milk, but I'll be taking soy in more moderation in lieu of your advice.

There are issues with soy milk which you may not be aware:
http://www.nourished.com.au/articles/the-ploy-of-soy
Unpasteurised cow or goat milk is by far superior in terms of nutrition, unless of course you are intolerant. Many who are intolerant to milk find they are not intolerant to raw milk.

[...] I picked up Michael Anuzis’ Top 8 High-Utility Foods via this week’s Healthy Eating, Dieting & Fitness Blog Carnival. I like the way he used the phrase, “high-utility” and “for special purposes” to introduce and entry about functional foods… or mostly functional foods, at least. The miso, rice ball and carbs don’t count, unless they’re fortified. [...]

I think I learned about half of these talking to you before, like when you ordered yellowtail at Godaiko when we went. Thanks for a great list of things to try.
